Walnut Way Equine Extravaganza

The Walnut Way Equine Extravaganza was held at Walnut Way farm in
Shelby County KY at the end of June and was hosted by Marilyn
Macfarlane (the farm owner).nbsp; For those that werenrsquo;t able to attend,
the event enjoyed a crowd of approximately 100 attendees, and saw a
variety of interesting equine performances which included traditional
Arabian dress for both horse as well as the rider, young riders showing
their equine prowess, barrel racing, tandem riding, western discipline,
and gaited styles of riding (3, and 5 gait).

The show was done by the Walnut Wylde Wryders which are the horse
farmrsquo;s youth members and is an annual event at the Shelby County horse
farm and it is used as a fund raiser to raise money for charity.nbsp;
Approximately $400 was raised from the event, and it will be donated to
either a therapeutic riding center, or perhaps even some sort of
community service project within the local area.

All in all, the event received big accolades from the participants, and the attendees that got to enjoy the event.

Shelbyville Kentucky Horse Arena

The proposed Shelbyville Kentucky horse arena located on Dover Road
passed another hurdle for approval.nbsp; The local Shelbyville KY
government entity Triple S Board of Adjustment amp; Appeals determined
that there were 9 conditions to go with the conditional use permit for
Rocky Fork Feeders to construct the arena.

The 9 conditions are:

1.nbsp; The facility will only be utilized by the Kentucky Cutting Horse Association amp; its affiliates.

2.nbsp; The horse arena will be used on weekends, and holidays only.nbsp; Hours are limited to 9 am through 9 pm each day.

3.nbsp; The proposed entrance to access the farm site must be relocated
amp; approved by the Shelby County Road Department and comply with
their requirements and specs.

4.nbsp; Any outdoor lighting at the facility must be in compliance with the Triple S Planning amp; Zoning Commission requirements.

5.nbsp; Sanitary sewers system must be approved the government agency that oversees those facilities.

6.nbsp; Landscaping will be installed and maintained around the horse
arena, and the Recreational Vehicle amp; Trailer parking areas.

7.nbsp; Recreational Vehicle parking will be temporary.

8.nbsp; Events held at the facility will be submitted and approved on an annual basis.

9.nbsp; A proposed site plan for the real estate development would be submitted for approval by the board.

This opens the way for some new horse and equestrian events to be
held within Shelby County.nbsp; Shelby County Kentucky is the Saddlebred
horse capitol of the world.nbsp; Hopefully this will help further propel
Shelby County KY as a popular area for other horse breeds and
disciplines as well.

KY Horse Farms struggle with Hay Prices

The Louisville KY newspaper The Courier-Journal wrote an excellent
article in the Friday January 18 2008 edition regarding a growing
problem for many KY Horse farms.

As many of you are aware, hay prices this year have gone up
dramatically.nbsp; This has led many Kentucky horse farms owners to begin
giving away, or donating their hroses because they lacknbsp;adequate food
for the horses tonbsp;get through the winter.nbsp; In some more extreme cases,
horse owners are simplynbsp;abandoning their animals.

The problem began back in the Spring of 2007.nbsp; Hay stocks were
recorded to be the lowest that theyrsquo;ve been in about 50 years.nbsp; Then
there was a late hard frost that killed almost all alfalfa crops in
KY.nbsp; Add in the very long drought this summer, and soaring temperatures
- and most persons that normally have hay surpluses, ended up only
getting perhaps 1 cutting of hay off their fields this year.nbsp; [For
reference, on our horse farm in KY, we only got 1 cutting of hay off
our field, where last year we got 3 cuttings.]

This set up Kentucky in the unusually awkward position of instead
being a hay producer and exporter - many persons are having to get hay
brought in from other states.nbsp; [We personally, have had hay brought in
from Indiana and Wisconsin to feed take care of the animals on our
horse farm.]

The hay problems have grown to such a dramatic impact for many horse
farms owners, that the Kentucky Horse Council is currently compiling
information its receiving from state vets and other equine interests,
to prepare a report on the situation.

Some of the equestrian shelters are becoming full occupancy.nbsp; One
such example is the Kentucky Equine Humane Center located in
Nicholasville KY.nbsp; Their 50 horse facility is nearly full.nbsp; While they
donrsquo;t turn any horse away - some are having to be euthanized because
adequate care is not able to be provided.

Hay prices are currently $7-8 per square bale for grass hay in KY.nbsp;
[We paid $8.50 per square bale for large bales that contained an
alfalfa/timothy mix that came from Wisconsin.]nbsp; Several feed companies
are charging as much as $13 per bale.

A secondary matter that is compounding the abandonment problem, is
the law that went into effect in 2006 regarding a ban on horse
slaughter.nbsp; This has left persons with few alternatives if they canrsquo;t
afford to feed their horse - and they canrsquo;t put it down, what do they
do with it?nbsp; All of this has resulted in a big increase in horse
abandonment.

Its quite an unfortunate circumstance for the horses, and KY horse farms owners.

The Kentucky Horse Council is calling for persons to be much more
selective in breeding for the coming year.nbsp; Too many horses are getting
bred, that really offer no value to the industry beyond it being
nothing more than a pleasure horse.nbsp; And there are a lot of nice horses
currently available either for adoption - or very cheap costs of
purchase.

Its the end of January, so hopefully we only have a couple more
months to get through before the grass start growing again and the
horses will be able to sustain themselves on their own forage on their
own farms.nbsp; Alternatively, the spring real estate market has already
started movingnbsp;- and if persons need to get out of the business, now is
a good time to put on the market your KY horse farms for sale.nbsp; Theres
still a strong demand for quality set up facilities that are ready to
be utilized and now is a great time to start marketing those farms for
sale in KY.

Remember, its your obligation to take care of your animals.

If you are a horse owner, and unable to adequately able to care for
your horse, please call the Kentucky Equine Humane Center at
859-881-5849 and they should be able to help you with your situation.

Smoking Ban In Effect Today at Churchill Downs in Louisville KY

The smoking ban went into effect today at Churchill Downs in
Louisville KY.nbsp; Part of a comprehensive ldquo;no smokingrdquo; effort inside all
public buildings, Churchill Downs had sought an exemption feeling that
it would hurt their customers enjoyment of their facilities.

But, their appeal was denied earlier this month by Jefferson County
Circuit Judge Denise Clayton as there really was no basis for them
wanting the exemption - other than them just wanting it.

Churchill Downs elected to comply with the regulation after the end of the Fall meet (which was on Saturday November 24 2007).

It probably wonrsquo;t affect the track as much as you may initially
would expect as all enclosed public areas were already smoke free, with
the exception of the Champions Lounge.

Now, the Champions Lounge, along with the rest of the buildings will be smoke free.

Smokers are still welcome to smoke outside - but most felt that they
should have had at least 1 area inside to get out of the weather to be
able to smoke if they chose to do so.

Louisville Kentucky - Boys Haven Equine Program

The Louisville Kentucky newspaper, The Courier-Journal spotlighted
an article today about the Boys Haven Equine Program that is a part of
the Boys Haven non-profit home located on Goldsmith Lane in Louisville
Kentucky.

The equine program teaches troubled children to care for a horse -
and it teaches them a little about humanity as well.nbsp; They learn that
just as the horse may need their help, that its ok to ask others for
help if they need it as well.

The Boys Haven home was founded in 1948 by Father James Maloney and
has a long standing tradition of helping troubled children and young
adults to become productive and sensitive members of our community.

The equine program was started last year by Jay Wilkinson.nbsp;
Wilkinson has had prior experience as a harness amp; thoroughbred
trainer and thought that horses would help persons that were having
difficult reaching out to others, to be able to reach out to horses and
in turn establish a relationship that would help them reach out to
others.

The first graduate from the program is James Jones Junior, and he
currently works at the Boys Haven stable that is located at the
Churchill Downs Trackside Training Center which is just off Durrets
Lane.nbsp; The Boys Haven stable cares for 7 horses currently and the
program is gaining popularity that they will likely expand the effort.

Currently, 10 younger adults are allowed to participate in the
program at a time.nbsp; Annual costs for the equine program run
approximately $200,000 per year.nbsp; This money goes toward acquisition of
1 or 2 horses, as well as care/feeding, staff salaries, and stabling
costs for the horses.

In March 2007, the students constructed a horse barn to help learn
additional skills, as well as improving the experience within the
program itself by having the students contribute toward the continued
effort.

Each of the studentrsquo;s tuition is funded by various grants as well as
state programs.nbsp; The Boys Haven equine program is currently a 6 month
study - but the students are allowed to move at their own pace because
of additional factors that should be taken into consideration (mental,
or physical limitations, etc).

Boys Haven currently owns 2 horses, with the remaining 5 horses in the program being owned by various persons including:

Ricky Sullivan who is located in Alabama.

9 persons that are a part of the Father Maloney Stable syndicate

A partnership owned by Wilkinson, Matthews, and Elbert

The owners of the 5 horses that the Boys Haven equine program
utilize, receive 30 of any purse winnings for their horses - and are
not charged anything for the horses expenses, and care.

The equine program students receive 10 which is split among the
students depending on how much they worked for the care and training of
the horses.

The Boys Haven Equine Program appears to be doing well.nbsp; Theyrsquo;ve won
6 of their last 20 starts - including most recently the race held at
Churchill Downs 2nd race.

Churchill Downs will not host Breeders Cup in 2008 or possibly 2009

The Louisville KY newspaper The Courier-Journal reports in the
October 27 2007 edition, that Churchill Downs racetrack may no longer
host the Breeders Cup World Championships.

Churchill Downs has hosted the Breeders Cup World Championships a
record 6 times - and has gathered the championshiprsquo;s largest attendance
in 5 of those 6 years, including most recently in 2006.

But when the bidding came for the 2008 event, Churchill Downs didnrsquo;t
even make a bid to be host for next yearrsquo;s competition. And taking it a
step further, Churchill Downs has not indicated any interest in hosting
it for 2009 either.

Officials for Churchill Downs in Louisville Kentucky have complained
that their racetrack gets so little money from the event, that its not
worth the effort of being host.

This puts an interesting spin on the Breeders Cup organization that
is based in Lexington Kentucky. Currently, there are state tax breaks
for the organization for having a business headquarters in Kentucky,
and holding the event regularly in KY. But if its not hosted in
Kentucky by 2009, legislators will be forced to remove the tax benefits
that the organization is currently receiving.

This places the event and organization in somewhat of a peculiar
position. Churchill Downs has indicated that if they shared in a
greater portion of the proceeds, then they would be interested in
hosting the event possibly again in the future.

The 2007 Breeders Cup Championship is currently going on in
currently in Monmouth Park in New Jersey. The 2008 Breeders Cup
Championship will be at Santa Anita Park in southern California.

At this point, no other track has complained about their split from the track proceeds.

Hopefully the differences will be worked out. The Breeders Cup
Championship is one of the big horse events in Kentucky, and it going
to other states is a real shame for the entire horse community.
