Regulations on Horse Sales ProposedThe Lexington Kentucky newspaper, The Lexington Herald-Leader wrote an article yesterday about regulations on horse sales proposed.  Lawmakers in Frankfort KY have received requests for additional regulations, and had contemplated creating new laws to satisfy those requests, but the Kentucky horse industry has proposed regulations on policing itself which seems to have satisfied the lawmakers and many critics.

The proposed additional horse sales regulations include:

Including a code of conduct for agents into sales contracts

A voluntary confidential ownership registry

Ban on use of anabolic steroids and prohibition of cosmetic practices which include injections behind the knee (that may disguise a horse’s discomfort or problem to a potential buyer).

Additionally the president & CEO for the National Thoroughbred Racing Association Alex Waldrop has stated that the horse industry will eventually require disclosure for all conformation changing procedures - which should be in place within in the next year.

Lawmakers intend to keep an eye on the Kentucky horse industry and hope that its ability to police itself will come to fruition. If, however, they continue to see that complaints are being filed, they will be prepared to step in to address those concerns.
