70 Horses Rescued from Kentucky Horse Farm

The Lexington Herald Leader newspaper, published an article about 70
horses that were recently rescued from a Kentucky horse farm in
Jessamine County KY. The horses were found to be malnourished and in
poor condition. Most of the animals at the horse farm were Tennessee
Walking Horses. The KY horse farm is located in Jessamine County,
approximately 6 miles south of Nicholasville KY on the far end of
Hunters Ferry Road.
The owners defended their position that the horses weren’t neglected or abused - and were only in their current position because of the lack of forage (grass, etc) in the fields at present - primarily as a result of the drought last year, and the tremendous amount of rains that we’ve had this winter. Just an update for those that have been following the proposed
Kentucky Horse Park hotel: According to the Finance and Administration
Cabinet in Kentucky, no bonds have been sold for the proposed
equestrian hotel. And if the bonds aren’t sold by April 15, 2008,
there will be insufficient time to get the hotel finished in time for
the World Equestrian Games in 2010 to be held at the KY horse park.
[Park officials do not want construction going on at the facility while
the 2010 WEG is going on.]
As we’ve noted recently, many horse farms in Kentucky are feeling
the pinch right now trying to take care of their horses. Hay prices are
way up. And the ground has been extremely muddy, so this has resulted
in horse farms needing to use more hay to supplement the feeding of
their horses. Add in the ban on horse slaughter, and this has resulted
in some owners that have been unable to care for their horses, in
either just not feeding their horses sufficiently, or just turning them
loose to fend for themselves.
Finally, after a fairly grueling year between the drought last
summer, and the tremendous amount of rains this winter, the Kentucky
government officials have unveiled a plan to help Kentucky farms. The
plan is called Kentucky Agricultural Relief Effort and will give $8.15
million to Kentucky farms that were damaged last year. Many farms
beyond just KY horse farms have been affected. A little known fact is
that while the largest Kentucky farms product is horses, Kentucky is
also the largest cattle/beef producer east of the Mississippi River. We
even are in the top 5 for goat production in the United States.
As I’m certain many of you are aware, there is a proposed KY horse
racing track to go in London Kentucky - filling the last license
available for horse racing in Kentucky. The original purpose and scope
for the new facility was to promote a quarter horse racetrack.
The
Lexington KY newspaper, the Lexington Herald-Leader published a story
on February 21 2008 regarding more details for the proposed KY Horse
Park Hotel. The topic of the feature…
The Courier-Journal newspaper reported a story regarding the
Kentucky General Assembly, and the proposed Kentucky Horse Park Bond
Plan calling for $118 million.
The Shelbyville KY newspaper, The Sentinel-News reported in a story
that John Long has been selected as the chairman for the 2010 Alltech
FEI World Equestrian Games.
It was reported in The Courier-Journal newspaper, that the Kentucky
General Assembly is making efforts to ready the Kentucky Horse Park for
the 2010 FEI Alltech World Equestrian Games, by making substantial road
improvements to accommodate the tremendous number of visitors expected
to attend the 16 day event.
The Lexington Herald-Leader broke a story about the KY Horse Park
recently has plans for a large museum expansion to begin in April
2008. This is the first substantial addition to the facility since it
debuted in 1978. The plan calls for increasing the size of the
building by 8000 sq.ft. which would be an increase to the total square
footage of the museum of approximately 30%.
