Lexington Kentucky is famous across the world for its phenomenal horse farms. Numerous farms have been written about in books, and even have played a part in several popular movies. From Calumet Farm to the famous thoroughbred racetrack Keeneland Raceway, a lot of history is in the Lexington KY area.
Touching back on Calumet Farm, just to provide some history, this farm was originally established by William Wright in 1924. He passed away shortly thereafter in 1931, and the farm went to his son Warren Wright. In 1940, Whirlaway became Calumet Farm's first triple crown winner. In 1968, Forward Pass became the 8th Kentucky Derby winner for Calumet Farm. In 1982, the farm moved ownership to J.T Lundy, the only heir - he was son in law to the Wright’s only child. In 1992, Calumet Farm went up for auction. Henryk de Kwiatkowski won the auction with a final bid of $17 million and restored the entire facility. He passed away in 2003, and now the farm is operated by a group of his family members that act as trustees.
If you are wanting world class horse farms, Lexington KY is a good place to be. You can find farms with thousands of acres, and a double digit number of barns on many places.
Even the Queen of England keeps her horses here. [She most recently had her horses boarded and stayed herself at Lane's End Farm while attending the Kentucky Derby. Lane's End Farm is owned by Will Farish who is the former United States ambassador to England.]
